Step 2 — Choose Your Procedure
🔑 Type E
Key data is stored in the PCM itself
After replacing the PCM, use the simple 3-step key cycle (Passive Programming). No OBD2 scanner or app required.
View Procedure🔧 Types B, C, F, G
PATS is controlled by Cluster or Standalone module
After replacing the PCM or Cluster, use the Auto101 App with the OBD2 Interface to run the Link PATS function (10-minute security procedure).
View Procedure🔑 PATS Type E — Passive Programming
Simple 3-step key cycle after PCM replacement — no scan tool required
Why Type E is Different
Type E vehicles store all key data inside the PCM. When you install a new PCM, it has no programmed keys. The vehicle allows you to program two keys using a simple key cycle — no special equipment needed.
📋 Passive Programming — 3-Step Key Cycle
-
First Key Cycle
Insert the 1st programmed key → Turn ignition to RUN (do not start) → Hold for 6 seconds → Turn to OFF and remove key -
Second Key Cycle
Insert the 2nd programmed key → Turn ignition to RUN → Hold for 6 seconds → Turn to OFF You must use 2 different (unique) keys. The theft light should extinguish. -
Start the Vehicle
Turn the key to start — the engine should crank and run normally
⏱️ Timing Matters
Keep the key in RUN for the full 6 seconds on each cycle. Both keys must be unique — they cannot be duplicates of each other. The security (theft) indicator light should turn off after the second cycle.
All Keys Lost? If you also lost all original keys (not just replacing PCM), use the Auto101 App's Clear Keys function first to erase all stored keys, then follow this procedure with 2 new keys.
🔧 PATS Types B, C, F, G — Link PATS via App
Use the Auto101 App to synchronize the new PCM or Cluster with the vehicle's security system
Ford PATS Link — Step-by-Step Walkthrough
What "Link PATS" Does
After replacing a PCM or Cluster on Types B, C, F, G — the new module has no security data. Link PATS runs a 10-minute security access session that synchronizes the replacement module with the other PATS modules in the vehicle. The Auto101 App handles the entire process automatically.
⚠️ Before You Start
Security Access takes 10 minutes. Keep the ignition ON (engine off), do not interrupt the process, and make sure your phone stays connected and the screen stays active throughout.
What You Need
Hardware: Auto101 OBD2 Interface (plugged into vehicle's OBD2 port)
App: Auto101 Pro (free download — iOS & Android)
Vehicle: Ignition ON, Engine OFF
📱 Module Detection Is Automatic
The app automatically detects which PATS module type your vehicle uses (PCM, Standalone, or Cluster) and communicates with the correct module. If multiple PATS modules respond, the app will ask you to select the correct one.
Traditional scan tool — Parameter Reset & key cycle (reference)
Standard OEM-style wording for 1996–2010 only. Use with a J2534 device or shop scan tool if you are not using the Auto101 app.
🔧 PATS Types B, C, F, G
Replacing PCM with Parameter Reset Function
Required Equipment
Essential Tool: A scan tool with Parameter Reset function, or a J2534 scan tool is required to perform the reset. The tool and software used will give specific instructions to follow.
⚠️ Important
Security Access Time: The security access process takes 10 minutes. Do not interrupt this process.
📋 Step-by-Step Procedure
-
Cycle key to RUN position
Turn the ignition key to the RUN position (do not start the engine) -
Enter Security Access on the PATS control function module:
- Type B: PATS module
- Type C: Instrument Cluster
- Type F: PCM
- Type G: Instrument Cluster Module
-
Select "Parameter Reset"
After security access is complete, select Parameter Reset and exit Security Access -
Perform PCM Keep Alive Memory (KAM) reset
Select and execute the KAM reset function -
Start vehicle
Turn the key to start the engine - the vehicle should start normally
🔄 PATS Type E (OEM key cycle)
Simple Key Cycle Procedure - No Scan Tool Required
Simple 3-Step Process
Great News! Type E PATS vehicles can be reset with a simple key cycle procedure. No scan tool is required for this PATS type.
📋 Quick Reset Procedure
-
Cycle key 1:
Turn key to OFF position, then turn to RUN and keep for 3 seconds, then back to OFF -
Cycle key 2:
Turn key to RUN position and keep for 3 seconds, then turn to OFF -
Start vehicle
Turn the key to start the engine - the vehicle should start normally
⏱️ Timing is Important
Follow the 3-second timing precisely for each key cycle. Keep the key in the RUN position for exactly 3 seconds before turning it OFF. Some vehicles use 6 seconds — if 3 seconds does not work, try the 6-second passive programming in the main Type E section above.
Reference — OEM notes
🔍 PATS Type Identification
Critical: Make sure to identify your vehicle's PATS type correctly before proceeding with the reset procedure. Each type requires different module access points and procedures.
⏱️ Timing Requirements
Precision Matters: Follow the timing requirements precisely, especially for the 10-minute security access period (Types B, C, F, G) and the key cycle timing (Type E — 3 seconds in this reference, or 6 seconds in the main Type E section if required by your vehicle).
🛠️ Scan Tool Requirements
Types B, C, F, G: A scan tool with Parameter Reset function or J2534 compatibility is required. Type E does not require a scan tool in the traditional OEM 3-step procedure above.
Auto101 OBD2 Interface
The only tool you need for Ford PATS Link, Clear Keys, DTCs, and more — all from your phone.
- Link PATS (Types B, C, F, G) — 10-min procedure via app
- Clear Keys — erase all keys and start fresh
- Read & Clear DTCs — all Ford-specific codes
- Get Info — VIN, calibration IDs, part numbers
- Also covers Chrysler, GM relearn & more
Important Notes
🔍 Identify Your PATS Type First
Critical: Always confirm your vehicle's PATS type before starting. Type E uses a simple key cycle while Types B, C, F, G require the Link PATS procedure via the app. Using the wrong procedure will not damage anything, but it won't work.
⏱️ Do Not Interrupt the 10-Minute Process
Types B, C, F, G only: The security access window is exactly 10 minutes. Keep the ignition ON, the app open, and the OBD2 device connected throughout. The app shows a live countdown timer so you can monitor progress.
🔑 All Keys Lost? Use Clear Keys First
If you lost all programmed keys or the keys are incompatible with a replacement module — run Clear Keys in the app first, then reprogram 2 new unique keys using the key cycle procedure. You need 2 different keys to complete the programming.
🚗 Vehicle Coverage
Supported: Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles with PATS — model years 1996 through 2010. Vehicles from 2011 onward use a newer system and are not covered by these procedures.
